Welcome to the Suzy Hamilton (Susan Gillis Browne) website!
Susan Gillis Browne is the fashion label designed exclusively for our own two Suzy Hamilton boutiques – one on Montpelier Parade, Harrogate, North Yorkshire and the other in Appleyard, Holt, North Norfolk (incidentally, both are in lovely towns of character which are, in themselves, worth a stay should you live in another part of the country!).
The label was started in the early 1980’s and is still designed primarily by it’s founder, Sue Hamilton, and, we’re proud to say, is still made in the UK close to the Yorkshire Dales. We specialise in dresses, soft suits and jackets for absolutely all occasions, from special events to business wear and the every day, all designed with the discerning woman in mind! Each garment is made with pride from start to finish by one of our highly skilled machinists.
Our design philosophy is to always allow the silhouette, the cloth and the colour of a design to speak for itself without unnecessary fuss so that the wearer is in harmony with what she is wearing and is not overshadowed by it. We like to use mostly natural fibre cloths where possible with an emphasis on cottons, linens, silks and wool and take great pleasure in using a broad palette of exquisite colours and textures.
Our styles are continually evolving yet pay homage to the timeless incomparable cut and style of the 1950’s and early 60’s. – Our full circle skirts are truly full circle and the cut of our shifts has been honed over the years to become the ultimate in flattering the female form. Many of our designs incorporate fine detail such as piped seams and edging, covered buttons and rouleaux loop fastenings. Some ensembles are sold as suits, however, most dresses can easily be teamed with one of our matching or co-ordinating jackets to form a suit, making everything extremely versatile.
As our designs are made here in the UK and many are timeless, unlike other shops, we do not rely on two seasonal deliveries a year – new stock arrives every one or two weeks all year round so it’s always worth calling in to one of our boutiques for a browse. We endeavour to put as much as possible on the website, however, the full extent of the rich visual and sensory feast that constitutes a visit to one or our outlets is well worth the effort! Our sales staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and give a service second to none, enthusiastically helping and inspiring when required. Alternatively they are always more than happy to assist via telephone or e-mail.

A Brief History by Sue Hamilton (Chief Designer for Susan Gillis Browne) –
I began my career in fashion design through a love of colour, textiles, silhouettes and all that goes into the creation of beautiful clothes. My inspiration, then as now, came from wonderful British designers such as Bill Gibb, John Bates, Jean Muir etc, wonderful sleek and stylish Americans such as Ralph Lauren, Halston, Calvin Klein and Donna Karen and, of course, the incomparable style of Dior and the other great names of the 1950’s.
After studying design and all aspects of the clothing industry and working in London I formed a partnership with my mother, Joan, in1976 and proceeded to produce collections which were sold to independent retailers up and down the country. In 1983, in order to offer customers the full range and vision of my creations, I opened my first small boutique in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. In 1987 my husband, who not only has a BA in fashion and textiles from the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art in London, but who also spent a number of years working both as a designer in the industry and as a fashion buyer for various department stores, joined the company and we opened our first Harrogate boutique on Parliament Street. We also operated a very successful outlet for some twelve years in the lovely city of Bath.
In ’07 we opened our boutique in Holt, North Norfolk and in ’09 relocated our Harrogate boutique to the picturesque Montpelier Parade. We continue to be inspired and produce beautiful, wearable clothes and hope you too will be inspired by our creations!
